Lactation Support

Helping you feed naturally

The Bay Medical Sacred Heart Family Birth Center is staffed with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

Her role is to provide support and education to new families, staff and physicians on the latest evidence-based information on breastfeeding management. It is important for every mother and baby to receive support and assistance so they may have a successful feeding experience. All families are encouraged to provide skin-to-skin care (also known as kangaroo care) immediately after birth and frequently during the first days of life to help the baby transition to life outside the womb.

The lactation consultant is an educator and counselor who helps mothers understand the basics of lactation; she also supports the nursing staff to assist moms with latching and getting breastfeeding off to a good start.

For complicated feeding issues or concerns, the IBCLC is available for consultation with families & staff. She can help with latching difficulties, painful nursing, low milk supply, nursing multiples, inadequate weight gain and other lactation issues, both while you are in the hospital or after you discharge.
