Sleep Disorders Diagnosed at the Laboratory

Are you one of the millions of Americans who suffer from the results of poor sleep? If you have any of these symptoms, you may have a sleep disorder:

  • Snoring or gasping for breath while sleeping
  • Waking up feeling tired
  • Stopping breathing while asleep
  • Having difficulty staying asleep
  • Sleep-walking
  • Having leg twitches during sleep
  • Falling asleep unintentionally

The Bay Medical Sleep Laboratory can diagnose sleep disorders including:

Sleep Apnea, which can cause people to stop breathing repeatedly during sleep. These periods of apnea can last for 10 or more seconds and can occur hundreds of times in a night. Besides depriving the body of much needed sleep, this condition could cause cardiac issues and severely lower blood oxygen levels.

Nocturnal Myoclonus, which is identified as leg thrashing or kicking during the night. Quality sleep is diminished leading to insomnia or excessive sleepiness.

Narcolepsy, which is an inherited disease associated with periods of sleepiness during the day that could be extreme. People with narcolepsy may feel muscular weakness when surprised, angry or amused and could experience terrifying dreams or hallucinations when they first fall asleep.
